Helping at-risk young women access higher education reduces economic vulnerability, negates unsafe migration, increases lifetime earnings, and paves the way for women to become future community leaders.
We know that it takes more than financial support for students to thrive in school. This is especially true for our students, who have all overcome incredible obstacles in order to pursue higher education. Our students have fled war zones, had childhoods impacted by poverty, survived abuse and neglect and are often the first person in their family–or village–to get a university degree. Many carry the emotional weight of trauma, displacement, and responsibility for supporting their families while navigating university life in an unfamiliar environment. We offer a community that believes in them and helps them heal as they build a future that once seemed impossible.
In addition to tuition and/or living expenses, we provide our students with professional counseling, one-on-one mentorship, mental health wellness retreats, access to an emergency medical fund, a one-time stipend to support international study and regular student gatherings to foster connection and resilience. This comprehensive model has contributed to our exceptionally high graduation rate of 98%.
We invest in students who are not only academically talented, but deeply committed to using their education to strengthen their communities. Our scholars include psychology students bringing desperately needed mental health services to refugee communities, education majors training the next generation of teachers in underserved schools, environmental scientists studying the impacts of climate change on Indigenous communities, and journalists who have risked their lives to expose the Burmese military’s human rights abuses.
Our alumni have gone on to have successful careers that embody this ethos. Our graduates now lead migrant learning centers, operate social enterprises and nonprofits serving refugees, provide healthcare in underserved communities, advocate for human rights, and inspire the next generation of young women—including the Director of Daughters Rising, who is herself a graduate of our Scholarship Program.
