Every child deserves more than safety—they deserve the opportunity to thrive. Baan Sukhito provides a family-style home for girls whose education and wellbeing have been disrupted by abuse, neglect, poverty, or legal barriers. Whenever possible, we work to preserve family relationships and support reunification rather than long-term separation.
By combining a stable home with education, mentoring, professional mental health care, healthcare, and trauma-informed support, we address the root causes that place children at risk of exploitation. Our goal is not simply to provide shelter today, but to equip every girl with the security, confidence, and opportunities she needs to build an independent future.
Our commitment doesn’t end when a child turns eighteen. Every girl who graduates from Baan Sukhito is automatically enrolled in the Daughters Rising Scholarship Program, receiving full support through university so she can continue her education, pursue meaningful employment, and build a life defined by independence, dignity, and opportunity.
Baan Sukhito—meaning “House of Kindness”—was born from a simple but heartbreaking realization: for many children, the greatest barrier to education isn’t ability—it’s the lack of a safe place to grow up.
Our first resident was the young daughter of undocumented refugees from Myanmar. Because her birth had never been officially registered, she was stateless, leaving her family without access to many of the opportunities most children take for granted. Her older siblings had already been forced to leave school and seek illegal work in Bangkok to help support the family. Her parents asked if we could provide their youngest daughter with something they could not: a safe home where she could continue her education.
As conflict, poverty, and the COVID-19 pandemic deepened across the region, more families found themselves facing impossible choices. Many children were forced to leave school because of abuse, neglect, addiction within the home, or simply because their families could no longer afford transportation from remote mountain villages. What began as caring for one child quickly grew into a much greater need.
In 2021, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donor Vincent Roubinet, Daughters Rising was able to build a permanent home for Baan Sukhito in our local Karen community, replacing a rented house with a purpose-built, family-style home where girls could live, learn, and heal.
Today, Baan Sukhito provides far more than a safe place to stay. By combining a loving home with education, mentoring, professional mental health support, and a clear pathway into our University Scholarship Program, we ensure every girl has the opportunity not only to recover from adversity, but to build a future defined by safety, independence, and possibility.
