OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOr indigenious WOMEN

Daughters Rising recognizes that the key to women’s empowerment is access to education. When a woman is educated she is less vulnerable to the tactics of traffickers and has more economic opportunities to support herself and her family.

Most of our students are refugees, having escaped war zones in Myanmar to persue their dreams of higher education.

The students we support are young women from Myanmar and Thailand who have already shown themselves to be leaders in positive community change. They have all faced considerable barriers in their pursuit of education. However, their persistence and courage have enabled them to overcome in the face of danger, poverty and discrimination.

For many of the students we sponsor, their academic prowess has allowed them to win partial scholarships from their schools or other organizations—but without further financial support, continuation of their studies would remain impossible. We seek to bridge the gap, so that they can concentrate on their studies without dealing with the constant worry about how to pay for food or the next semester’s fees.

Success in college is difficult for everyone but for refugee students the challenges are immensely greater. As refugees, these students not only have to pay higher tuition fees as international students, but both they and their families are legally barred from employment in Thailand. This means that even if they can attend school they often have no way of supporting themselves while in school nor do they have support from their families. Our scholarship program is helps both with tuition fees and living expenses to help each student achieve their academic dreams.
